It's Hunting Season
Hello there! It’s a very special time of year here in Maine -- it’s hunting season! So if you’re wondering why I’ve been a little lax in answering your questions, it’s because I’ve got more important things happening right now -- just kidding! 

Although it’s only archery season (firearms season starts next month), I’ve been getting lots of requests for “shooter’s shirts.” I think folks must be trying to get some well-rounded practice in before taking their guns out for the year – which is an excellent idea, I might add. Now for those of you who aren’t into hunting or shooting, shooter’s shirts are garments that have a pad on the shoulder (and sometimes the sleeve) that buffers the kick from shooting a shotgun, muzzleloader or rifle.

So if you’re looking for shooter’s shirts, check out the Ask Phil questions listed below but also check these other suppliers that I just found: Capital Apparel, 2955 Sidco Dr., Nashville, TN 37204, or (800) 748-6990; www.capitalapparel.com, and Tiger Hill/Cottex, 6000 Miller Ct. E., Norcross, GA 30071, or (800) 275-5258; www.tiger-hill.com. Embroiderers, start offering these to your hunter clients! They’ll be a big hit!

Dear Phil,
I need a source for shooting shirts as used by trap and skeet shooters with a gun pad on the right shoulder. Looking for these in a knit and woven material. I can not find any suppliers. Can you help?

Spurgeon, I do know of a supplier that has shooter shirts, but they’re soon discontinuing them. It’s Pella, P.O. Box 324, Pella, IA 50219, or (800) 832-6225; www.pellaproducts.com. I called them to find out the best way to order what they have left and the representative told me to contact www.ruggedclothing.com (one of Pella’s distributors) to find out about the remaining supply. (Or check back with them, they may have decided not to discontinue after all.) But, in case they do, I found you another supplier that seems much more promising. Clarkfield Enterprises, P.O. Box Clarkfield, MN 56223, or (800)-728-7140; www.clarkfieldoutdoors.com, has a shooter’s shirt in long and short sleeves in white and khaki, sizes S-3XL, style number 105. Clarkfield also has a shooter’s vest, so make sure you check that out. Best of luck this season!

Captain Bob, I love shooting skeet! I’m pretty darn good at it and I know what it’s like to have a 12-guage shotgun hit you in the same spot all day long! Go to Clarkfield Enterprises, P.O. Box 457, Clarkfield, MN 56223, or (800) 728-7140; www.clarkfieldoutdoors.com, has a shooter’s shirt in long and short sleeves in white and khaki, sizes S-3XL, style number 105. Clarkfield also has a complete line of apparel for hunters so make sure you check out the whole collection. Oh, and Captain, make sure the safety’s on when you’re not shooting. I nearly shot my foot off one time.

Dear Phil,
I am looking for what’s called “shooter’s shirts.” These are used for people who go to the trap range and shoot clay pigeons. I am sure that they are used by other shooting enthusiasts too. They are usually made of cotton twill with one shoulder having a heavier patch with a different color placed on it. Please provide me with as many suppliers as you can because I have contacted dealers like Columbia and these shirts are not what my customers like. I used to get my shooter shirts from a company named Ruddy Duck. 

They have gone out of business. I would appreciate any help you can provide.
